SLAYER released their fifth album, "Seasons in the Abyss," on October 9th, 1990 through Def American, recorded between March and June 1990 at Hit City West, Hollywood Sound and Record Plant in Los Angeles with Rick Rubin producing for the third album running. At forty-two minutes it is their longest record, and the last with the full original lineup until Dave Lombardo returned for "Christ Illusion" in 2006. The lyrics largely abandoned fantasy for the hells available on Earth — "Dead Skin Mask" built around Ed Gein, "War Ensemble" opening the record at full sprint. The doubled vocal on "Temptation" was an accident: Tom Araya sang it twice, both takes were played back together by mistake, and Kerry King liked it. It reached number forty on the Billboard 200, went gold, and produced the band's first music video, filmed at Giza.
