BARONESS released their second album, "Blue Record," on October 13th, 2009 through Relapse Records, recorded in May and June at The Track Studio in Plano and Elmwood Studio in Dallas, produced by John Congleton. Forty-five minutes, written from 2007 onward and built as a clear companion piece to 2007's "Red Album." The Savannah band had started in sludge metal and were now writing something far broader — twin-guitar melody, acoustic interludes, John Dyer Baizley's roar carrying actual tunes, and his own painted artwork tying the whole sequence of albums together. Metacritic reached 87, which counts as universal acclaim: AllMusic's Phil Freeman gave it five stars and called it a ferocious album unafraid to be genuinely beautiful, Pitchfork gave 8.5, Rock Sound nine out of ten. A video for "A Horse Called Golgotha" premiered that November, and the song became a 7-inch single the following year.
