Season of Mist released The Killing Gods and Rituals of Power before MISERY INDEX left for Century Media, where Complete Control landed in May 2022. "Feral Future" brings them back to the label, and it's their first new material since that record.
The single is solid death metal with a grindcore groove at its core, and the credits explain why: the music was written by Jason Netherton and Adam Jarvis, bass and drums. Built from the rhythm section outward, the track keeps Mark Kloeppel and Darin Morris in service of the riff. The playing is tight from front to back, with no solos or bells and whistles. Netherton's bark does the rest.
The lyrics mark a shift too. MISERY INDEX have spent two decades aiming their commentary at class struggle and manufactured consent; this time the target is our relationship with nature. "Nature isn't something we rule over or exist outside of. It's something we are immersed in everywhere all the time," Netherton says. "This song champions the rewilding of damaged and corrupted human spaces." From this band, rewilding sounds like another front in the same fight.
As a first taste of the upcoming eighth full-length, it does its job. Excited to hear the rest.
