First Metal Releases of 2026: ELLENDE, FUATH Drop New Albums

The first metal release day of 2026 delivers several notable albums that set an early high bar for the year ahead, with the atmospheric black metal underground leading the charge. Austrian one-man project ELLENDE releases "Zerfall" via AOP Records, continuing mastermind L.G.'s deeply personal exploration of melancholy, isolation, and the beauty found within emotional devastation.

"Zerfall" — German for "decay" or "disintegration" — extends the thematic and sonic territory ELLENDE has carved out across previous releases. The project, which has earned a devoted following for its ability to channel profound emotional weight into sweeping black metal compositions, delivers some of its most ambitious work here. Extended track lengths allow the music to breathe and build through movements that range from blast-beat fury to passages of almost unbearable tenderness. The production captures both the raw power of the heavy sections and the delicate nuance of the quieter moments, creating an immersive listening experience that rewards full-album engagement.

Scottish atmospheric black metal act FUATH drops "III" via Northern Silence Productions, the third installment in the acclaimed series from the project helmed by Andy Marshall, also known for his work in SAOR. While SAOR explores Celtic folk metal territory, FUATH channels a more traditional Scandinavian-influenced atmospheric black metal sound, with "III" pushing further into expansive, nature-inspired compositions. The album's glacial atmospheres and haunting melodic passages have already drawn comparisons to the finest work of BURZUM and SUMMONING, while maintaining a distinctly Scottish character.

Also hitting shelves on the year's first release day: EXCAVATED GRAVES' debut mini-album "Life Isn't For Everyone" via Selfmadegod Records, offering a punishing blend of death metal and grindcore that provides a stark counterpoint to the day's atmospheric offerings. HOLOGRAMAH's "Abyssus.Versus.Versiculos" adds an experimental edge to the proceedings.

It's a strong and diverse start to what promises to be a landmark year for extreme metal. The quality of these early releases suggests that 2026's underground scene will be every bit as vital as the high-profile releases dominating the mainstream conversation.
