In an emotional interview following the news that MEGADETH's self-titled album has debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, Dave Mustaine reflected on his 39-year journey to the top of the American album chart. "When I started this band after being kicked out of METALLICA, I never imagined we'd be here," Mustaine shared with visible emotion during a video call with Billboard. "There were so many times I thought it was over — the addictions, the injuries, the cancer. But the music always brought me back."
Mustaine credited multiple factors for the historic achievement. He singled out the fans first and foremost, describing the MEGADETH fanbase as "the most loyal in all of metal." He also acknowledged the farewell tour's momentum and the timing of the "Behind the Mask" documentary, which premiered in theaters just days before the album's release and offered an unprecedented behind-the-scenes look at the making of the final record. "The documentary opened people's eyes to what we've been through," Mustaine explained. "It wasn't just about the music — it was about survival."
Addressing his health, Mustaine confirmed he remains cancer-free following his 2019 throat cancer diagnosis and treatment. He described himself as energized and deeply motivated for the farewell tour dates ahead, which will stretch through 2026 and into early 2027. "I'm singing better than I have in years," he stated. "The treatment changed my voice, but I've adapted, and honestly, some of the new stuff sounds even more aggressive because of it."
The conversation also touched on Mustaine's relationship with METALLICA. Without going into detail, he acknowledged that reaching No. 1 provided a sense of personal validation that he had long sought. "It's not about competition anymore," he said. "It's about legacy." The No. 1 debut makes MEGADETH's final album their greatest commercial achievement, surpassing the peak of "Countdown to Extinction" and providing a triumphant conclusion to one of thrash metal's most consequential careers.
