Michael "M-Bro" Embro, former drummer of Canadian thrash metal band RAZOR, has died suddenly at the age of 63, reportedly from pneumonia after being hospitalized unexpectedly. The news sent shockwaves through the thrash metal community, where Embro was revered as a founding figure in the Canadian extreme metal scene of the early 1980s that helped define an entire nation's contribution to the genre. Embro contributed to RAZOR's formation in Guelph, Ontario in 1983 and recorded on their first four classic albums — "Executioner's Song" (1985), "Evil Invaders" (1985), "Malicious Intent" (1986), and "Custom Killing" (1987) — before departing the band. Those records are widely regarded as cornerstones of Canadian thrash metal, with "Evil Invaders" in particular earning a reputation as one of the genre's most ferocious and uncompromising early statements that still holds up decades later. Embro's drumming on those albums was characterized by relentless speed, pinpoint precision, and a raw intensity that perfectly complemented the band's razor-sharp riffing and aggressive vocal delivery from frontman Sheepdog. RAZOR are recognized as pioneers of Canadian thrash metal alongside SACRIFICE, VOIVOD, ANNIHILATOR, and EXCITER, helping establish a national scene that rivaled the Bay Area and German thrash movements in sheer aggression and technical prowess. The band's influence on subsequent generations of extreme metal musicians remains profound and enduring, with countless death metal and thrash acts across the globe citing their early albums as essential listening and foundational influences. Embro is survived by his wife Rosanna, with whom he shared 37 years of marriage and a life dedicated to music. The thrash community has paid extensive tribute across social media platforms, with musicians from EXODUS, TESTAMENT, OVERKILL, KREATOR, and many other prominent bands sharing heartfelt memories and sincere condolences. His contributions to the genre will never be forgotten.
