MAYHEM Drop Final Pre-Album Single "Realm of Endless Misery"

MAYHEM have released "Realm of Endless Misery," the final single from "Liturgy of Death," just two days before the album's February 6 release via Century Media Records. The track presents a harrowing vision of human existence where suffering is the governing principle — a closed realm sustained by repetition, fear, and manipulation. Through its mantra-like structure and cold, oppressive imagery, the song confronts listeners with the mechanics of misery without offering a shred of redemption or catharsis.

The composition represents some of MAYHEM's most sophisticated songwriting to date. Guitarists Teloch and Ghul construct a labyrinth of dissonant riffs that shift between glacial, doom-laden passages and eruptions of frostbitten tremolo picking, while Hellhammer's drumming oscillates between hypnotic mid-tempo grooves and devastating blast beats. A short but muscular bass solo from Necrobutcher provides the only breathing room from the wall of dissonance, its rumbling tone cutting through the mix like a blade.

Vocalist Attila Csihar delivers what may be his most unsettling performance on the album, alternating between his signature throat singing, operatic cleans, and guttural screams that sound like proclamations from beyond the grave. Metal Hammer's Tracks of the Week described his vocal as sounding like "Christopher Lee raging from beyond the grave" — an apt comparison for the theatrical menace he brings to every note.

"Realm of Endless Misery" marks the start of an outstanding three-song run that closes the album, and early reviews suggest "Liturgy of Death" may be MAYHEM's strongest work since "De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas." The album features a guest appearance from Garm of ULVER on the opening track "Ephemeral Eternity," adding yet another layer of intrigue to this landmark release in black metal history.
