Hellfest Open Air 2026 in Clisson, France, scheduled for June 19-22, has announced its latest wave of artist confirmations, adding progressive metal visionaries OPETH, melancholic dark metal pioneers KATATONIA, and goregrind originators CARCASS to an already extraordinarily stacked four-day lineup. The additions strengthen Hellfest's well-earned reputation as one of the most diverse, prestigious, and musically adventurous metal festivals in the world, offering programming that spans everything from avant-garde progressive metal to classic extreme brutality and beyond.
Swedish progressive metal masters OPETH, led by the creatively restless frontman and guitarist Mikael Akerfeldt, will perform on the Mainstage on Saturday in a coveted evening slot. Over the course of nearly three decades, OPETH have undergone one of the most remarkable artistic evolutions in heavy metal history — transitioning from their roots in breathtakingly complex progressive death metal through to their current incarnation as purveyors of vintage 1970s-influenced progressive rock — yet they remain equally revered and respected in both the extreme metal and progressive rock camps. Their live performances are consistently legendary for Akerfeldt's characteristically dry wit between songs and the band's extraordinary dynamic range.
Liverpool goregrind pioneers CARCASS take the Valley stage on Sunday as part of their extensive European touring campaign with fellow extreme metal legends KREATOR. Led by vocalist and bassist Jeff Walker and guitarist Bill Steer — both founding members who helped create entirely new subgenres of extreme metal — CARCASS have experienced a remarkable late-career renaissance following their triumphant 2013 reunion album "Surgical Steel" and its accomplished 2021 follow-up "Torn Arteries." Their surgical precision and genre-defining blend of grindcore, death metal, and melodic metal continues to set the gold standard for extreme music.
Swedish dark metal architects KATATONIA round out a strong progressive metal presence at this year's Hellfest edition, bringing their atmospheric and emotionally immersive blend of progressive metal, gothic rock, and post-rock to the festival. Previously confirmed headliners RAMMSTEIN, GHOST, and TOOL guarantee that Hellfest 2026 will be among the most significant and talked-about festival events of the European summer touring season.
