Luminate's annual music industry report for 2025, released on March 7, reveals that heavy metal music generated $4.2 billion in global revenue during 2025 — a 22% increase over 2024 and the highest revenue figure the genre has ever recorded. The report, which aggregates data across streaming, physical sales, digital downloads, licensing, synchronization, and live revenue, marks the third consecutive year in which heavy metal has been identified as the fastest-growing major genre in the global recorded music market.

The growth is driven by multiple converging factors: the continued dominance of streaming consumption, where metal fans exhibit above-average playlist depth and song-repetition behavior compared to other genres; a significant resurgence in vinyl sales, with metal albums representing 28% of all vinyl sold in 2025 despite representing a far smaller share of the overall music market; and the record-breaking performance of the live touring sector, where multiple heavy metal acts (METALLICA, IRON MAIDEN, SLIPKNOT, RAMMSTEIN) were among the 20 highest-grossing touring acts of the year.

Geographically, the strongest growth markets for metal in 2025 were Southeast Asia (particularly Indonesia, the Philippines, and Thailand, where local metal scenes are exploding), Brazil, Mexico, and Poland. North America and Western Europe remain the largest absolute markets, but their growth rates lag behind the emerging-market expansion. The report also highlighted the significant role of video gaming in driving metal discovery among younger listeners, citing the appearance of metal soundtracks in major game releases as a key vector for genre introduction. Luminate analysts predict that heavy metal could reach $5 billion in annual revenue by 2027 if current trends hold.
