NAPALM DEATH have announced a deluxe edition of their 2020 album "Throes of Joy in the Jaws of Defeatism," set for release on May 15, 2026 via Century Media Records. The expanded edition marks the album's fifth anniversary and includes the original seventeen tracks remastered alongside a bonus disc containing twelve previously unreleased recordings: four complete songs recorded during the album sessions but cut from the final tracklist, five live recordings from the band's 2022 European tour (the first major tour following the album's release), and three experimental ambient pieces created by vocalist Mark "Barney" Greenway as standalone sonic exercises.
"Throes of Joy" was widely acclaimed upon its release as one of NAPALM DEATH's strongest efforts in decades — a ferocious collection that demonstrated the band's ability to absorb influences from industrial music, post-punk, and extreme electronic music while maintaining the blasting grindcore core that has been their signature since their formation in Birmingham in 1981. The deluxe edition also includes an expanded lyric booklet with Greenway's extensive notes on the political and social themes that inform each song.
Speaking about the anniversary, Greenway stated that "Throes of Joy" was recorded in a spirit of defiance during a period of significant global anxiety, and that the music's energy comes in part from the band's determination to respond to a world that felt increasingly destabilized. "We didn't know if we'd be able to tour it properly because of the pandemic," he said. "But the music existed, and that was what mattered." NAPALM DEATH continue to tour extensively and are confirmed for multiple major festival appearances in summer 2026.
