AT THE GATES will release their eighth studio album, The Ghost of a Future Dead, on April 24 via Century Media Records. The album stands as the final recorded legacy of vocalist Tomas Lindberg, who passed away in September 2025 after a battle with adenoid cystic carcinoma. Lindberg wrote and recorded his vocals more than two years before his diagnosis became public — making The Ghost of a Future Dead a profound and unknowing farewell from one of extreme metal's most distinctive voices.
The album features the return of co-founding guitarist Anders Björler — his first appearance on an AT THE GATES record since 2014's At War with Reality — making this a full-circle moment for the Swedish melodic death metal pioneers. It was recorded and mixed by Jens Bogren at Fascination Street Studios in Örebro, Sweden, with artwork by longtime collaborator Robert Samsonowitz.
The lead single, "The Fever Mask," was released in February alongside a tribute video directed by Patric Ullaeus and assembled in Tomas Lindberg's memory. The band has dedicated the album entirely to him.
AT THE GATES are one of the founding acts of the Gothenburg melodic death metal movement, having released seminal records including Slaughter of the Soul (1995) and At War with Reality (2014). The Ghost of a Future Dead will be their final studio work with Tomas Lindberg's voice — an album that carries immeasurable emotional weight for the metal community.
