MEGADETH frontman Dave Mustaine has offered candid advice to young musicians looking to break into the industry, stressing the importance of surrounding yourself with the right people — not just the right friends.

In a recent interview with Brazil's 92.5 Kiss FM, Mustaine was asked what he would tell up-and-coming bands. His response went straight to the core: "You've gotta circle yourself with the right people. If you have a band, you've gotta look at the performers in the band. Do you have someone in the band because he's your buddy or because he's a great fucking drummer? Or a great guitar player? Or is he my brother-in-law? 'Cause that's usually the first indication that you're not gonna make it."

Mustaine also stressed the importance of a professional infrastructure around the music: "You've gotta make sure you have a good team — a good manager, a good attorney, a good business manager, which is an accountant. If you have those things, and most importantly you've got good songs, you're on your way."

The MEGADETH leader, who has navigated decades of lineup changes himself, has long preached a strict "no friends in the band" policy. He previously stated: "I've never hired anyone that was a friend. I always hired people and got into a business relationship and over time became friends with some."

MEGADETH's self-titled final album debuted at No. 1 in the United States in late January 2026, earning 73,000 equivalent album units in its first week — a chart-topping send-off for one of thrash metal's defining acts.
