Swedish doom-death innovators KATATONIA released their second album "Brave Murder Day" on August 1st, 1996, through Avantgarde Music. Recorded in July 1996 at Unisound with Dan Swanö engineering, the record found the band abandoning the raw black-tinged doom of their debut for something colder and more hypnotic. With Jonas Renkse's voice damaged, OPETH's Mikael Åkerfeldt was drafted to deliver lead growls across most of the album, while Renkse moved to drums and sang the fragile "Endtime" himself. Anders Nyström played bass and Fredrik Norrman handled guitars, building the album's signature architecture: slow, repeating minor-key figures that circle for minutes without resolving. Songs like "Brave" and "Murder" became a template that a generation of depressive and post-metal bands would study closely. It remains the pivot point where KATATONIA began turning grief into melody rather than noise.
