DOWN Pay Tribute to Dimebag, Vinnie Paul and Ozzy at Emotional Sweden Rock 2026 Performance

The heavy metal supergroup DOWN delivered one of the most emotionally charged performances at this year's Sweden Rock Festival in Sölvesborg, Sweden, with vocalist Philip H. Anselmo dedicating the song "Lifer" to three giants of the metal world no longer with us: PANTERA's Dimebag Darrell Abbott, his brother Vinnie Paul Abbott, and BLACK SABBATH vocalist Ozzy Osbourne.

The dedication was a moment of genuine weight in a set already full of power and intent. Anselmo, who co-founded DOWN with guitarist Pepper Keenan (CORROSION OF CONFORMITY), Kirk Windstein (CROWBAR), bassist Pat Bruders, and drummer Jimmy Bower, has been one of the most prominent voices in American heavy metal and sludge since the early 1990s. The band's forthcoming studio record makes the occasion even more significant.

DOWN's appearance at Sweden Rock came loaded with news: guitarist Kirk Windstein confirmed in interviews surrounding the festival that the band's long-awaited follow-up studio album is recorded and awaiting final mixing. "It's done. It's been recorded... We just need to find the right person to mix it properly," Windstein stated, adding that an October 2026 release is the current target.

The album will be the band's first full-length since Down IV – Part II in 2014 — a gap of over a decade — and based on Windstein's description, the record draws on the same vein of crushing, riff-driven music that defined their classic debut NOLA (1995). "Everybody's got ideas," Windstein noted, suggesting the creative chemistry within the band remains as potent as ever.

Dimebag Darrell Abbott was killed on December 8, 2004, while performing with DAMAGEPLAN in Columbus, Ohio. His brother Vinnie Paul died of heart disease in June 2018. Ozzy Osbourne, the Prince of Darkness, passed away on July 22, 2025, following a final performance with the original BLACK SABBATH lineup at a charity concert in Birmingham. Anselmo's triple dedication encompassed three losses that have left enormous voids in the world of heavy music.

Fan-filmed footage of the performance circulated widely, with "Lifer" receiving a particularly emotional reception from the Swedish crowd. The moment served as a reminder that for all its volume and aggression, heavy metal is as much about community, memory, and grief as it is about riffs.

DOWN will return to North American stages this summer for the "Strap It Down" headlining tour, running August 15 through September 4 with support from HELMET and SPIRIT IN THE ROOM. For a band with as storied a legacy as DOWN, both the tribute and the tour announcement confirm that this is a group very much alive and moving forward.
