20 Buck Spin has surprise-released "Infinitude's Passage," the third full-length from Portland progressive death metal band ÆNIGMATUM, streaming now everywhere.
The album picks up where 2023's "Deconsecrate" left off, pushing the band's blend of technical precision, dark melody and unrelenting force further into territory where clarity and chaos blur into each other. Sudden tempo shifts, fractured rhythms and spiraling harmonies give the six songs an elaborate surface, but ÆNIGMATUM keeps every detour in service of a larger structure — frenetic bursts of speed resolve into passages of melodic clarity and dissonant turbulence, with the compositions expanding outward rather than settling into a fixed shape.
Recording duties were split across several hands: drums were engineered by Charlie Koryn at Elektric City, pre-production and guitar/vocal tracking came from Pierce Williams, bass and bass clarinet were handled by Brian Rush, and saxophone was recorded by Patrick Corona. Colin Marston — whose credits include KRALLICE and GORGUTS — reamped, mixed and mastered the album at Menegroth, The Thousand Caves, with additional reamping from Keith Merrow at Merrowsound Studios. The record's visual identity comes from artwork by Daniel Hermosilla, liner art by Marcus Kempton, a logo from Logan Williams and Connie Wang, and layout by Matt Oien.
The pedigree behind the boards fits the record's reference points: "Infinitude's Passage" sits somewhere between the technical density of KRALLICE and GORGUTS and the melodic death metal lineage of AT THE GATES and DARK TRANQUILLITY, without settling comfortably into either camp.
