Swedish Viking metal titans AMON AMARTH have announced their new album, "The Allfather Awakens," set for release on October 2 via Metal Blade Records. The band has also shared the album's thunderous lead single, "Gjallarhorn," alongside a music video.
"The Allfather Awakens" will span ten tracks, including "Eight Legs Of Thunder," "Kvasir's Blood," "We Rule The Waves," "Upphaf," "Die With A War Cry," "Raven God," "The Allfather Awakes," "Oden's Hunt" and "Ascending Like An Eagle." As with much of AMON AMARTH's catalog, the album draws heavily on Norse mythology, with "We Rule The Waves" built around lyrics that read: "From cradle until the grave / As long as the sun sets in the west / We rule the waves / Our restless hearts / Have brought us far."
As with previous records, Oden — the Norse "Allfather," a deity of war, wisdom, death, magic and poetry — remains the through-line across AMON AMARTH's lyrics and artwork. The band has stressed that "The Allfather Awakens" is not a concept album, but rather a collection of historically inspired, epic tales of conflict and sacrifice for a greater good.
Guitarist Olavi Mikkonen detailed the band's methodical approach to recording the album, describing a process built around focus and patience rather than speed. "We worked on one song at a time and made each song as good as possible," he explained. "Then we recorded one song at a time until each track was totally finished — drums, guitars, and vocals. Only then did we start on the next one." The song-by-song approach marks a shift from the more traditional block-recording method the band has used on past records, and Mikkonen suggested it allowed each track to develop its own identity rather than being shaped to fit a broader session.
"Gjallarhorn" arrives as the album's explosive opening track, following the release of AMON AMARTH's first-ever acoustic excursion, "Upphaf." Where the stripped-back "Upphaf" carried the solemnity of an oral history whispered under the Allfather's shadow, "Gjallarhorn" returns to furious, classic AMON AMARTH territory, built on a driving, upbeat riff and a high-tempo, catchy chorus that should make it a future live staple.
The song draws on the myth of Oden's ultimate sacrifice — gouging out his own eye and casting it into the well of wisdom, Mímisbrunnr, in exchange for cosmic insight and foresight that would shape the fate of gods and men alike. AMON AMARTH frame "Gjallarhorn" as a re-enactment of that ancient reckoning, extending Oden's offer to listeners: sacrifice your sight, gain your foresight.
"Gjallarhorn" is also named for the horn associated with the god Heimdall in Norse mythology, said to sound the alarm at Ragnarök — a fitting title for a song built on the twin-guitar attack and battle-hymn choruses that have defined AMON AMARTH since their 1990s formation in Tumba, Sweden.
The album follows a string of massive North American touring in support of the band's recent records, with AMON AMARTH continuing to cement their status as one of extreme metal's most consistently popular live draws. Frontman Johan Hegg and company show no signs of slowing down more than three decades into their career, with "The Allfather Awakens" positioned as another chapter in the band's long-running mythological narrative.
