Massachusetts metalcore veterans SHADOWS FALL marked three decades as a band with a hometown concert at the MGM Aria Ballroom in Springfield on July 18, a milestone the city's mayor, Domenic J. Sarno, honored by officially declaring the date "Shadows Fall Day."
The band, joined onstage by fellow Massachusetts acts UNEARTH and WITHIN THE RUINS as support, delivered a 15-song set drawing across its catalog, opening with "Destroyer Of Senses" and closing the main set with "Thoughts Without Words" before returning for an encore of "The Light That Blinds." The set list leaned heavily on the band's most celebrated material, including "King Of Nothing," "The Power Of I And I" and "Enlightened By The Cold," alongside two of the band's most recent singles, "Souls Devoured" and "In The Grey" — the group's first new songs in more than 12 years.
SHADOWS FALL's last full-length release, "Fire From The Sky," came out in 2012, but the band has shown renewed momentum recently, releasing "In The Grey" in December 2024 and "Souls Devoured" in May 2025 after signing with MNRK Heavy. Speaking about the follow-up material still in progress, guitarist Brian Fair said the band is closing in on completing a new full-length. "We're rounding the final stretch... We're getting a lot done, and I'm very excited about these songs," he said, adding that the band's new label partnership has given the group room to work at its own pace: "They've been super flexible about letting us do things the way we need to do 'em."
Formed in 1995 in Massachusetts's Pioneer Valley, SHADOWS FALL became one of the defining bands of the early-2000s New Wave Of American Heavy Metal alongside acts like KILLSWITCH ENGAGE and UNEARTH, blending melodic death metal riffing with hardcore-rooted intensity across albums like "The Art Of Balance" and "War Within." The Springfield show doubled as both a celebration of that legacy and a signal that new SHADOWS FALL material is on the way, with the hometown crowd getting an early preview of songs from the band's next chapter alongside three decades of career-defining cuts.
