SHADOWS FALL's first new album in over a decade is finished, guitarist Jonathan Donais has confirmed. The follow-up to 2012's "Fire From The Sky" will arrive via MNRK Heavy, tentatively in 2027.
"[The new album is] done, but we've just gotta go through everything and figure out the right times and people's schedules," Donais said, describing a record that wasn't originally planned. The songwriting began almost by accident, during rehearsals for the band's 2021 reunion shows, when Donais started passing around new riffs. What began as loose jamming gradually turned into full songs, and eventually an album's worth of material.
Donais said the writing process pulled him back toward the bands he was listening to when SHADOWS FALL first formed, particularly thrash and '90s death metal, and that revisiting those influences "with a new perspective" reignited his enthusiasm for the project after the band's 2015 hiatus.
Two songs have already surfaced as previews: "In The Grey," released in December 2024, and "Souls Devoured," from May 2025 — the band's first new material in over 12 years at the time, and the clearest signal yet that a full album was taking shape behind the scenes.
SHADOWS FALL formed in Worcester, Massachusetts, in 1995 and built a following through the 2000s metalcore boom on the strength of albums like "The Art Of Balance" and "The War Within" before going on extended hiatus in 2015. The band marked its 30th anniversary with a hometown concert last month, and with the new record now complete, that milestone looks set to be followed by the band's most substantial return yet.
