ANAGNORISIS are back after ten years. "Caregriever", the Louisville band's fourth album, arrives October 23, and lead single "Nothing Left To Give" is streaming now.
The record did not begin as an ANAGNORISIS album. Active from 2003 to 2016, the band went quiet after a short run of dates behind "Peripeteia" and the departure of longtime keyboardist Sam Hartman. In 2023, frontman Zachary Kerr started writing under the name Caregriever — a solo outlet for the emotional and physical exhaustion of caring full-time for his father-in-law, who has since died. Reconnecting with guitarist and longtime creative partner Zak Denham, the two began shaping it into something bigger. The material went to bassist Josh Mumford and drummer Cody McCoy, the core lineup reformed, and recording began in the summer of 2024.
The album covers five years of watching a loved one decline. It is less concerned with death itself than with the long approach to it — grief, anger, guilt, isolation, exhaustion, and the contradictory feelings that usually go unsaid. The title names the condition precisely: the place where caregiving and grief stop being separable, where mourning starts years before the death, and where devotion and resentment, hope and despair all occupy the same room.
"'Nothing Left To Give' is about discovering that there are no perfect goodbyes," Kerr said. "I spent years wishing I'd had more time with my father, only to later be given years of saying goodbye to my father-in-law as his illness slowly took him away. One loss came too quickly, the other unfolded over years, but both left the same questions behind. This song exists somewhere between those two experiences."
Musically it is a deliberate turn. The band remain in post-black metal territory but have stripped away most of the symphonic scope of "Beyond All Light" (2013) and "Peripeteia" (2016) in favour of something darker, tighter and more immediate, with industrial and punk threaded through it.
Denham and Kerr produced and recorded it, with drums and bass tracked at Top Track Studios and Denham handling the mix and master. Mumford contributes backing vocals; Niels Riethorst wrote and sings "Death Of Man"; samples come from James E. Kerr. The sleeve is not new work — it draws on "Anguish", August Friedrich Schenck's 1878 painting of a ewe standing over her dead lamb as crows gather, and Charles Maurand's wood engraving after it.
Bölverk Collective handles the US CD, the band's own Negative Reflections the US LP, and Vendetta Records both formats in Europe. More previews follow in the coming weeks, and the band have signed with Waste Management Booking for a return to the stage.
