Our review of Death Mask Messiah, the first EXUMER album since 2019's Hostile Defiance, is now live. We gave it a 7/10.
Founding vocalist Mem V. Stein promised a return to a more "in your face" style, and the record makes good on it — fast, aggressive riffs in an old-school German and East Coast thrash coating, with production noticeably weightier than its predecessor. "Blinding Skies," "Allocated Savagery" and "Fratricide" stand out.
It isn't flawless. The vocals lack some of the signature screams of earlier records, and the lyrics don't always land. But as our Bay Area reviewer put it, the only question that counts is whether you can see yourself wrecking the pit on a random Tuesday night in the City — and here the answer is a resounding yes.
