(HED) P.E. have launched their own record label. Creator One Records arrives after more than three decades in which the California band have fused nu metal, punk, hip-hop and hardcore without ever settling into one of them, and it operates on a single stated philosophy: created by the people, for the people.
Formed in Huntington Beach in 1994 and signed to Jive Records for their self-titled 1997 debut, (HED) P.E. broke through with 2000's "Broke" and have released more than a dozen albums since, most of them on independent labels. Creator One Records is the next step in that trajectory.
The label's first release is a new single and music video, "Violent Girl", taken from the band's upcoming album "Relapse", due in October. Frontman Jahred Gomes is refusing to explain it. "'Violent Girl' is not a song about a girl," he said. "It's an analogy, a metaphor. I'd rather the listener figure it out than just give away the secrets."
That withholding is consistent with how the band have always worked: hard-hitting music paired with themes that reward a second listen, and an audience trusted to do its own interpreting. The track itself delivers the raw intensity and blunt attitude that have defined (HED) P.E. since the late 1990s, while leaving plenty under the surface.
The label launch is the logical endpoint of a long-running independent streak. (HED) P.E. have spent years insisting that artists should keep creative control and deal with their audience directly, and Creator One Records formalises that — the band now own the machinery that puts their records out, rather than renting it.
Fans can see the new material live this autumn: (HED) P.E. join NONPOINT and SPINESHANK on the "Even More Outta Control Tour", which runs across the United States. Between the new label, "Violent Girl" and a nationwide run, the band are heading into their fourth decade doing precisely what they have always done — making music on their own terms.
