DEATH ANGEL's Mark Osegueda Takes On 'Holy Diver' At DYNAMO METALFEST

Dynamo Metalfest has been trading in oddities since the Eindhoven festival's earliest incarnations, but Saturday, August 15 produced one that even the veterans in the field did not see coming.

Mark Osegueda — frontman of Bay Area thrash institution DEATH ANGEL, and since 2024 the voice of Kerry King's solo band — walked onstage in the Netherlands to sing "Holy Diver". The backing was provided by PRIMUS, whose set on the day was already the most left-field booking on the bill. Fan-shot video of the performance surfaced online within hours.

The song needs no introduction to anyone at a metal festival. Written by Ronnie James Dio, "Holy Diver" was the lead single and title track of DIO's 1983 debut, a platinum-certified record that established Dio as a bandleader in his own right after era-defining tenures in RAINBOW and BLACK SABBATH, and it remains among the most enduring things he ever put his name to. It was reissued as a Super Deluxe Edition in 2022.

The cover is not new to PRIMUS's repertoire. The band cut a studio version for the "A Handful Of Nuggs" EP, released in May, though that take was sung by Puddles Pity Party — the singing-clown persona of Michael Geier — which is a rather different proposition to handing the microphone to a man who has spent forty years screaming over thrash riffs.

Osegueda's own year has been busy on both fronts. DEATH ANGEL have a December European tour booked to mark thirty-five years of "Act III", following summer festival appearances and a run of dates supporting TESTAMENT, while King's touring schedule behind "From Hell I Rise" has kept the singer moving between two very different sets of material.

For a festival that sells itself on this exact kind of collision, it was a fitting closing image to the 2026 edition.
