NIGHTWISH are marking three decades with the most ambitious retrospective of their career. "The Greatest 30 Years On Earth" arrives December 11 via Nuclear Blast Records, and the Finns have opened the campaign with a live music video for "7 Days To The Wolves".
The collection is built around two deliberately contrasting nights from the "Human. :II: Nature." touring era. One is the high-octane arena spectacle in Amsterdam in 2022. The other is the 2023 homecoming show in Kitee, the small eastern Finnish town where the band formed — a far more emotional occasion, and one that closed a very long circle.
Alongside those concert recordings, the set unearths live-in-the-studio audio captured during the band's virtual live events, material that has been sought after since those streams went out and has never been released on its own. All of the audio has again been mastered at Finnvox Studios. Around it sits a curated archive of photographs spanning thirty years of touring, studio sessions and unguarded moments in between.
The piece most likely to justify the price is new. The release includes a documentary on founder and principal songwriter Tuomas Holopainen, directed by Ville Lipiäinen, digging into his approach to composition, the evolution of the band's mythology and the personal philosophy that has kept NIGHTWISH at the front of symphonic metal for three decades. For a songwriter who has spent most of his career letting the records speak, it is an unusual amount of access.
The band framed the set as an ongoing excavation rather than a tidy summary. "The whirlwind of 30 years is still scooping up building materials and curios: new interviews, documentaries, remixed songs from the 'Islanders Arms', photos and, are you ready? concert footage of the 'Human :ll: Nature' tour, shot in Holland and Finland," they said. "This is NIGHTWISH; the greatest years on earth so far!"
The "so far" is doing real work. NIGHTWISH have been on an open-ended hiatus from live performance, and the anniversary set arrives while the band's future is still being sketched rather than scheduled — Holopainen confirmed earlier this month that six songs are written for an eleventh studio album, with 2027 blocked out and no touring until a record is finished.
For now, "The Greatest 30 Years On Earth" is what thirty years looks like from the inside: two stages, one small Finnish town, and three decades of photographs nobody outside the band has seen.
