PAIN are back with "I Don't Give A Fukk", a new single and video out now via Reigning Phoenix Music. It is short, blunt and built entirely around a refrain designed to be shouted back.
Grinding guitars and a relentless electronic pulse carry Peter Tägtgren's unmistakable voice through three minutes of mechanized defiance. The lyrics take an unfiltered look at a world running on political theater, manufactured division and competing versions of reality — conspiracy imagery colliding with accusations of hypocrisy, capturing the specific exhaustion of being surrounded by noise and no longer knowing what to believe. It offers no answers. What it offers is a refusal to participate.
The song was co-written by Tägtgren and his son, PAIN drummer Sebastian Tägtgren, continuing a creative partnership that has been growing across recent releases.
"I'm really curious to see how people react, and I'm stoked about the new single," Peter said. "As most of you know, I always try not to repeat myself, and this time I'm sure people will be wondering, 'What the hell is going on?' Sebastian and I wrote the song together, and lyrically I'm throwing my view of the world and of the last ten years right in your face. Hold on tight and get ready to smile."
PAIN has operated without rules for nearly three decades. Tägtgren was already established as the frontman of death metal band HYPOCRISY by the mid-1990s, but the material taking shape in his studio — electronics, programmed rhythms, heavy guitars and an increasingly sharp instinct for melody — did not belong there. Rather than force it, he built something new around it. The self-titled debut arrived in 1997 with Tägtgren handling vocals, instruments and production himself, and that one-man approach still defines the project in the studio.
Onstage it is a full band: Peter on vocals and guitar, Sebastian on drums, Jonathan Olsson on bass and Sebastian Svalland on guitar.
The collision that became PAIN's identity sharpened on 1999's "Rebirth" and exploded with 2002's "Nothing Remains The Same", the album that produced "Shut Your Mouth". 2005's "Dancing With The Dead" reached No. 3 in Sweden and carried a grim backstory — Tägtgren had collapsed in a Swedish pub after his heart stopped for roughly two minutes, an experience he later connected directly to the writing.
"I Don't Give A Fukk" follows PAIN's ninth studio album, "I Am".
