POSSESSED frontman Jeff Becerra has offered a fresh update on the band's long-gestating follow-up to 2019's Revelations Of Oblivion.
In a video message posted on July 31, Becerra said: "I'm fine-tuning the songs in preparation to go into the studio. Hopefully we'll record the new album, if everything goes right, in September. So basically, I'm just making some alterations, something to make the vocals hit a little harder and be heavy. I hope you like the album. I hope everything goes well, and we'll be able to record in September and then get the mechanisms and the machine rolling so that we can get you that new stuff out ASAP. Hold tight. Thank you for your patience. Stay blessed, stay possessed."
Groundwork has been going on remotely for some time. Back in March, Becerra explained the method: bassist Robert Cardenas has been tracking to recordings with a hidden click track, guitarists Daniel Gonzalez and Claudeous Creamer have laid down their parts, and drummer Chris Aguirre has been replacing electronic drums with real ones to build a usable scratch track before the band moves to a proper studio.
"After all their parts are done, Daniel will come over here. We'll go down into my basement down here, and record the vocal tracks. Then we'll head to the big studios," he said. "Traditionally, drums have a larger studio for a bigger drum sound. And then me and the guys will go into the other studio for the guitar, bass and vocals."
Becerra is aware how long the wait has been. "I know it's been seven years, almost seven years, but I'd rather put out something really viable and really good. I don't wanna put out any shit for you guys. I wanna put out the best, and hopefully it's worth the weight. Like I said, it's really different, but really POSSESSED and really fucking heavy."
He has been consistent about that "different" framing. In October 2025 he called the album "a whole different animal — I don't know if people will love it or hate it." A year before that, he described it as "very cool, very heavy, but a lot more tempo switching," and probably "one of our darkest albums." He also drew a line: "POSSESSED will never sell out. I'd rather die."
POSSESSED originally dissolved in 1987, leaving behind 1985's Seven Churches — one of the foundational documents of death metal — and the 1987 EP The Eyes Of Horror. Two years after the split, Becerra was left partially paralyzed by a failed armed robbery attempt. He reformed the band in 2007 with a new lineup, which delivered Revelations Of Oblivion in 2019, the group's first studio album in 33 years.
