UNTITLED WITH DRUMS are not making anyone wait for the last day. "Made Flesh", the French band's second album, arrives Friday, August 21 via Season of Mist — but all ten songs are streaming in full today on the label's YouTube channel.
The record sharpens a sound the band have been refining since 2014: a hybrid of '90s post-hardcore and 2000s alt metal, familiar in its bones but never content to sit still. Lucas D.'s riffs cut harder here than on anything they have released, while his more atmospheric passages stretch out further, threaded through synth work from Nicolas Z. that has become far more prominent this time around. Rémy D. anchors the songs with assertive, sometimes intricate grooves, and Martin L.B.'s vocals and bass carry the emotional charge that gives the album its weight.
That charge is the difference. The band have never sounded this exposed, and across a tight 38 minutes "Made Flesh" trades on tension and release rather than sheer volume — ten songs that are catchy and cutting in roughly equal measure.
It is a long way from where the band's debut landed. "Hollow" came out in 2020, days before France entered its first COVID lockdown — about the worst release window imaginable. The album drew widespread praise anyway, and carried the band onto the stages of Hellfest, London's Desertfest and Nuits de Fourvière, where they opened for DEFTONES and BARONESS.
