VOIVOD's official documentary premiered at the Fantasia International Film Festival in Montreal in July 2024, and then effectively vanished. Drummer and founding member Michel "Away" Langevin has now explained why — and given the first firm target for its release.
Asked by Poland's Noise Magazine when fans can expect "We Are Connected", Langevin said the delay was entirely a paperwork problem. "Right now we are aiming for a Christmas release. The main difficulty was to clear the rights for all the bits of music, because we've dealt with so many different publishing companies over the years, that it was quite a Kafkaesque enterprise."
That is now behind them. "We finally cleared all the music, and so there will be a version for the festivals, but a version for Blu-ray and a version for platforms, online platforms." He added that he had assumed the band's video game, "Voivod: The Nuclear Warrior", would arrive first, "but finally the 'We Are Connected' documentary will be available in not too long."
The film covers more than 40 years, from unlikely origins in Jonquière in northern Québec at the height of the Cold War through underground notoriety, tours and stages shared with IRON MAIDEN, RUSH and METALLICA, major-label backing and Billboard recognition, seismic lineup changes and the loss many critics assumed would end the band: the death of co-founding guitarist and composer Denis "Piggy" D'Amour.
It is directed by Felipe Belalcázar, who previously made the acclaimed Chuck Schuldiner documentary "Death By Metal", and was produced with full access to the band's archives. Talking heads include Tobias Forge (GHOST), Mikael Åkerfeldt (OPETH), Jason Newsted (METALLICA), Zach Blair (RISE AGAINST, GWAR), Tom G. Warrior (CELTIC FROST, TRIPTYKON) and Ivan Doroschuk (MEN WITHOUT HATS). An earlier attempt with Sam Dunn, announced back in 2006 and intended to focus on Piggy's life, never materialised.
Elsewhere, the band's summer has been complicated. Frontman Denis "Snake" Bélanger is sitting out the European tour to attend to a family matter, with former VOIVOD and current E-FORCE vocalist/bassist Eric Forrest deputising since July 10 in Paderno Dugnano, Italy. Earlier this year it was reported that Snake's partner, Christine McDonald, is battling stage four colorectal cancer.
A 10-city U.S. tour follows in October, opening on the 8th in Youngstown, Ohio, with Richmond metal-punk trio BAT in support. The band's "Symphonique" live album, recorded with the Orchestre Symphonique De Québec at the Grand Théâtre in Québec City in June 2025, was released on June 5 via Century Media.
