WORM have taken over KEXP's In-Studio series, and the full performance went live today. It is an unlikely pairing on paper — a Seattle public radio institution best known for hosting indie bands in daylight, handing the room over to a Floridian necromantic black doom band — and it works precisely because nobody softened anything for the occasion.
The session lands between two tours. WORM have just come off the sold-out TOTAL POSSESSION OF AMERICA run, and on September 29 in San Diego they rejoin CRADLE OF FILTH for the "Majestic In Death II" North American tour, which we covered when it was announced in July. Now they have added a European and U.K. leg for the fall, opening October 24 at Samhain Festival in Maastricht and running through November 14 in Oslo, with WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM.
That second billing has good timing behind it. WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM release "Estuary" on October 23 — the tour opens the following night, meaning European audiences get the record and the tour within twenty-four hours of each other.
Every night on both runs draws its setlist from "Necropalace", the album that put WORM on year-end lists before the year was half over — as we noted back in March, it was topping 2026 album-of-the-year lists by the spring.
WORM's palette reaches into most of the corners of extreme metal worth reaching into: the grandiose heights of '90s symphonic black metal on one side, the emotional technicality of '80s shred on the other. What separates them from the wave of bands mining the same decades is that they never sound like a tribute. On "Necropalace" they walk backwards into the future. The record lives in a world of its own — lush velvet and ostentatious gold under the dust of time, shadows that seem to move at the edge of vision, a loneliness that never lifts. Wounds of the flesh heal there. Wounds of the heart do not.
