CARTILAGE have put 'Operating Altar' online in full at Decibel Magazine, two days ahead of its September 11 release on Everlasting Spew Records — and the premiere finally does what three singles could not, which is explain what the record is actually about.
The San Francisco band's first concept album follows Matthew Krolmark, a medical student starting his final year at St. Petersen's University Hospital. His mother, a physician, insists he shadow the hospital's celebrated new surgeon, Dr. Warwick Locke. Krolmark then watches the deaths and the malpractice pile up until he uncovers what the building was used for before he arrived — torture and human experimentation — and works out that none of it has actually stopped.
"We're elated to finally unleash the sonic spectacle of insidious surgeries known as 'Operating Altar', featuring nine malicious tracks that combine to tell a tale of unfathomable terror," the band told Decibel. "Listen if you dare!"
Guitarist Mike Flory has been consistent about the method behind it. The band set out to write one long piece rather than nine separate ones, pulling in brutal death metal and classic heavy metal and pushing to tempos they had never attempted. "'Operating Altar' is uniquely formulated to leave your ears bleeding with pleasure," he added — "our Maggot O-Pus, if you will."
Decibel's verdict places the album in the CARCASS and IMPETIGO lineage without any of the viscera hosed off, with blast beats, theatrical dialogue and the competing gutturals and shrieks of vocalist Mark Wallace and guitarist/vocalist Ria Flory turning the hospital setting into something far more interested in dissection than healing.
It was recorded and mixed by Scott Evans — a name that keeps surfacing this month, having also produced the new NEUROSIS record — and mastered by Leon del Muerte, with cover art by David Romero of Cinemamind.
The album is out Friday on CD, cassette and digital, with vinyl following this winter. The tour starts four days later, with GOETIA of Washington, D.C. on every date except the last two, and DEGRAVED and UNIDAD TRAUMA also on the bill.
