Swedish d-beat institution DISFEAR will release The Last Nail, their first album since 2008's Live the Storm, on November 20 via Relapse Records. The first single, "Early Graves," is out now.
The record carries a heavy weight: it features the final performances of vocalist Tomas Lindberg and drummer Marcus Andersson, both of whom died of cancer before its release. Lindberg, also the voice of AT THE GATES, passed away more than a year ago; Andersson died only weeks ago. Guitarist Henrik Frykman, lost shortly after Live the Storm, completes the list of three members the band has buried since their last record.
According to the band, the material was written over 14 years and recorded over the last three. In spring 2023, Lindberg arrived at Welfare Sounds in Gothenburg to touch up a few demo vocals and instead re-recorded all eight songs in one burst. His diagnosis came later that year. Both he and Andersson insisted the album come out as soon as possible, and Andersson got to see a finished copy before he died.
"Tomas and Marcus were extremely proud of their performances on this album, as we all are, and we invite you to hear their final performances on The Last Nail," the band said, adding that the April 2024 session where the lineup was last photographed together was "a time of laughter," not darkness. "Marcus, Tomas, and Henrik, this one is for you."
Instruments were tracked with Kurt Ballou at God City and with Per Stålberg at Welfare Sounds. Magnus Lindberg mixed the album at Redmount Studios, and Sören von Malmborg mastered it at Cosmos Mastering. Opener "A Circle of Disease" and "Early Graves" set a blistering pace, with Lindberg's lyrics dwelling on a world grinding itself toward collapse.
