DUNGEON SERPENT will release their second album, Lamentations Of The Shadowkingdoms, on October 30 via Profound Lore Records on LP, CD and digital — the Vancouver melodic death metal outfit's first record for the label, and their first in five years. A video for lead single "Rainland's Elegy" is out now.
The follow-up to 2021 debut World Of Sorrows keeps the project's focus on fusing the morbid and romantic strains of pre-2000s extreme metal, but pushes well past it: six tonally distinct, thematically bound pieces played with far greater speed and ferocity, drawing from black metal, brutal death metal, jazz and grind, and swelling into orchestral grandeur through Hellenic-tradition keyboards and violins from contemporary composer Anju Singh (THE NAUSEA). Arawn again handles vocals, guitars, keyboards and bass, now joined by drummer Bhraonáin (FAKE DUST). Damian Herring of HORRENDOUS (BLOOD INCANTATION, RIPPED TO SHREDS, SENTIENT HORROR) mixed and mastered at Subterranean Watchtower Studios, with cover art by Marc Potts.
"I think this is in many ways the most creative song on this album and we pulled off some of our most interesting ideas to date here, especially the big middle section which combined DISMEMBER style sequenced patterns with modal jazz influenced chord movements and bass solos playing around the key changes," Arawn says of the single. "The music video was a very DIY affair filmed on essentially no budget, but this makes it extremely fucking true to the cult and genuine."
