Caligari Records and Black Legion Records have set September 25 as the international release date for the self-titled debut EP by FUNERAL from Lima, Peru, and have put its second track, "Averno", online ahead of it.

FUNERAL are new — the band came out of Lima's underground in 2025 — but the three members are not, all of them veterans of that scene. What they have made is sixteen minutes of blackened hardcore punk with a deathrock streak, or deathrock played by a black metal band with a hardcore rhythm section; the labels stop being useful fairly quickly. Nilo handles guitar and bass, Sabasius drums, and Cavernoso howls over the top, with staccato blasts, chorus-drenched guitar and a genuinely shredded throat colliding across five songs.

The label files it next to G.I.S.M., DEVIL MASTER, BONE AWL, HÆVNER, BLOT & BOD, RUDIMENTARY PENI, DAWN OF HUMANS and early ICEAGE — a reference list that gets the coordinates right without softening anything.

Worth clearing up: this is not the FUNERAL from Arequipa, and it is not the Norwegian funeral doom band of the same name either. Different country, different decade, different speed entirely.

The EP was recorded at Lowe Studio, with vocals cut at "El Templish", and mixed and mastered by Will Killingsworth at Dead Air Studios. Cover artwork is by Cassidy McGinley, the logo by Enmanuel of Dark Existences Arts, and Satanist Madness contributed backing vocals and photography. Caligari handles the cassette, limited to 150 copies; Black Legion handles the CD.
