Ukrainian metal band IGNEA have released "Prefab," the new single and video from their forthcoming album "Monumental" — and they have brought in a heavyweight. Andy LaPlegua of COMBICHRIST guests on vocals.
It is a deliberate swerve. The previous single, "Darkness," was a dreamy metal ballad; "Prefab" is an industrial metal track built for the neck. The band also point out that the video version and the version on streaming services differ, so both are worth hearing.
LaPlegua was not a late addition. "When we shaped the demo around 'Prefab,' we were basically hearing Andy's vocals in the back of our minds, and we're so glad he agreed to lend his voice," the band said. "Having COMBICHRIST as part of the industrial metal banger on our upcoming album — what could be more iconic?"
The subject is architecture, and what people do with their memories of it. "Prefab" is about the prefabricated apartment blocks of the socialist era — buildings originally meant to put a roof over everyone's head. "But like many socialist ideals, the concept was flawed at its core," the band explain: "uniform, industrial, stripping people of individuality and personal choice, making them feel like ants inside their own homes."
Those blocks are still standing across the continent, from Ukraine and Poland to Germany and France. People who lived in them carry real memories — but as IGNEA put it, that nostalgia is "often bittersweet at best, rooted in poverty and authoritarian regime."
The band are blunt about writing this from the inside. "As Ukrainians from a post-Soviet country, we grew up surrounded by the physical remains of a system that promised a bright future and delivered the opposite," they said. What they find stranger is the pull the era still exerts: "even knowing how flawed it was, many people still feel a pull toward certain parts of Soviet life. And it's not just us — plenty of Westerners romanticize Soviet aesthetics too, nostalgic for a past they never lived."
The video follows that idea literally. "We wanted to convey the feeling of a confined, uniform space, a cramped room representing a typical Soviet apartment, where only the tenants ever change."
"Prefab" is track four on "Monumental," IGNEA's nine-track concept album about nostalgia, modernist architecture and Cold War imagery, due October 23 via Napalm Records. Much of it was recorded in Kyiv through the winter of 2025–2026, in freezing temperatures and rolling blackouts. The album also features HIRAES on "Harmony Manufactured."
