Caligari Records has announced November 20 as the international release date for "Chronophage," the fourth album from SACCAGE, on CD. A vinyl LP edition will follow later, in December or early 2027.
SACCAGE formed in the late 2000s in Québec City, one of the more reliable northern hotbeds in metal, and "Chronophage" finds the quintet sharpening the collision of death metal and blackened crust they have been refining across three previous full-lengths. The D-beats hit harder here, the blast sections are more brutal and relentless, and the whole thing stays anchored by crushing grooves and an unmistakably unholy spirit. It carries some of the band's strongest riffs and most accomplished songwriting to date.
The record was mixed and mastered by Cody Baresich, whose credits include ISKRA and HEDONIST, with main artwork by Brad Moore. What SACCAGE do across these nine tracks is surgical rather than scattershot: they extract the most vicious elements of old-school death metal, grindcore and dark crust and fuse them into a single coherent assault. That cohesion extends past the music into the concept and the visual identity built around the album.
Beneath the bludgeon sit deeply nihilistic and satirical lyrics, dissecting the dystopian, decaying and time-devouring world we are all forced to live through — a reading the album title makes plain enough. Desperate music for desperate times, and "Chronophage" is exactly that kind of soundtrack.
Simultaneously modern and classic, it stands as a new highwater mark for the band, catching the Canadians at their most focused, most violent and most fully realised.
