SPIRITBOX have put out "Mourning" with no warning at all — no single announcement, no countdown, just the song and its video landing the same day through Pale Chord and Rise Records. It is the band's first new music since "Tsunami Sea" and the first indication of where they intend to go next.
"Mourning" takes the long way round. Courtney LaPlante spends most of it in her clean register, riding an atmospheric production that stays deliberately restrained through the opening stretches before it swells into heavier textures. Guitars, percussion and ambience build and recede around her rather than burying her, and her performance sits at the centre of the track from first bar to last. The dynamic contrast that has always been the band's actual signature is still here; the song simply takes its time getting to the payoff. It is a more subdued SPIRITBOX than the one that closed out the last album cycle, which is not the same thing as a soft one.
The accompanying video was co-directed by Alex Bemis and guitarist Mike Stringer, and it draws a hard line under the previous era. Gone is the stark black-and-white aesthetic that defined "Tsunami Sea". In its place are vivid natural landscapes, performance scenes shot outdoors, and an ethereal honeycomb-like structure that looks like nothing on this planet. A hooded figure recurs throughout, keeping an ominous undercurrent running beneath all that colour.
"Tsunami Sea" arrived in March 2025 and debuted at No. 1 on Billboard's Top Hard Rock Albums chart and No. 26 on the Billboard 200. The campaign around it also brought the band their third consecutive Grammy nomination in the Best Metal Performance category — a run that few bands of their generation can match.
LaPlante has not been idle in the gap. She features on "If The Sun Burns Out Tonight", the official anthem of the 2026 Valorant Champions Tour, due September 16, and at the end of August she announced her first signature vocal plugin: a modular vocal suite built around the tools and techniques behind her sound.
The band recently wrapped a North American run and head back overseas this month for European and UK dates, including their biggest UK headline shows to date at London's OVO Arena Wembley. In November they play Mohegan Sun Arena in Connecticut with METALLICA, and they close the year in Australia with festival appearances in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane.
