WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM have released the title track of their upcoming album Estuary as a new single, with a cinematic music video out today. The record arrives October 23 via Relapse Records in North America.
"Estuary" also opens the album, and it gathers most of what the band promised when they announced the record back in August: raw, volatile black metal cut through with noisy industrial textures, huge percussion and what the press notes call "seething gothic guitars". It follows first single "Ghosts Among The Obelisks".
The album is a piece of world-building set a thousand years after the collapse of civilization, where survivors wander haunted ruins among mutant creatures and open portals. Nathan Weaver (lead vocals, guitars) explains that in this future, with wilderness having swallowed the cities, the estuaries become nexus points "where magic has taken on physical form", and spirits good and evil walk the earth.
The band produced Estuary themselves, sticking to the analog, hands-on approach they are known for. Most of it was recorded at their own Owl Lodge studio in Olympia, Washington, with drums tracked by Nicholas Wilbur at The Unknown, a converted church in Anacortes. Touring bassist Galen Baudhuin (ARIDUS, STREET TOMBS) handles the low end.
