German atmospheric black metal act BONJOUR TRISTESSE have revealed "Disaster Triumphant," the title track of their fifth album. It is the second song made public from the record, which AOP Records releases internationally on November 20.
At 12:20, the new track is the longest piece on Disaster Triumphant and closes the album. It follows "Tomb of Hope," which opened the campaign last month, when we covered the album announcement.
The title is lifted from Max Horkheimer and Theodor W. Adorno's Dialectic of Enlightenment: "The Enlightenment has always aimed at liberating men from fear and establishing their sovereignty. Yet the fully enlightened earth radiates disaster triumphant." Founder Nathanael, who also plays in HERETOIR, built much of the record around the book's argument that progress freed humanity from superstition only to bind people and nature in new chains of industry, technology and mass society.
That critique of a "civilized" world at war with life itself runs through most of the lyrics, alongside meditations on loss, grief and melancholy and the urge to withdraw from a world sliding deeper into chaos. The cover, painted by Abismo Black Arts, carries the same double edge.
