GENITAL SHAME has released a music video for "Górecki Peace", the third single from "Wellness Plan". The album, Erin Dawson's second under the name and her first for The Flenser, is out October 30. The clip was directed by Paul Manganello, with Daniel Weingarten on camera.
We've followed the record since the signing was announced in August, through first single "I Want to Die Before You" and September's "Down Titration Strategies". The Flenser bills "Górecki Peace" as the most massive-sounding of the three so far; it sits eighth on the ten-track album.
The title nods to Polish composer Henryk Górecki and his Symphony No. 3, the "Symphony of Sorrowful Songs". Dawson explains that the track gives a body to intrusive thoughts — the "imago" of the lyrics — and is "really just about feeling terrible about a specific thing and finding comfort in music". The "Sorrowful Songs" line is a direct reference to Górecki, she adds, before undercutting herself: "I'm basically disgusted by how pretentious that sounds, but what can I say? It's a beautiful piece/peace."
Dawson describes "Wellness Plan" as "a process of acceptance through images of disappearing", and the pull between wanting to vanish and the body's refusal to give up runs through the whole record. Her background in music education and classical guitar shows in how harmonically dense the material is: riffs and melodies fold into one another, black metal and noise give way to brittle stillness, and the genre is treated as raw material to be pulled apart rather than a fixed language.
