Sydney blackened death metal quartet GOLGOTHAN REMAINS will release their third full-length, Born From Darkness Absolute, on November 20 via Dark Descent Records on CD, vinyl and digital. It's their first album in nearly five years, and the first preview track, "An Emanation of Exorcism," is out now.
The gap between albums wasn't idle. The band put out the mini-album Bearer of Light, Matriarch of Death in 2024 and toured with DEAD CONGREGATION and CONCRETE WINDS, and that live run shaped the new material. The band describe a more direct, "back to basics" record with little room for experiments, written to work on stage. "I think this is some of our fastest material, packed with energy, while still retaining the atmospheric tendencies we've always incorporated," they said. "It feels like once you hit play it doesn't let up for the entire runtime."
Lyrically, the album goes back to the genre's foundations: religious hypocrisy, anti-society themes, conflict, blasphemy and, at times, the occult. Greg Chandler of ESOTERIC mixed it at Priory Recording Studios, as he did the 2024 mini-album. The cover by Misanthropic Art draws on Slavic folklore and Orthodox religious imagery, in a palette the band call unusual for a death metal release.
