Denver sludge/doom trio IN THE COMPANY OF SERPENTS will head out on a fifteen-date run through the US Midwest and Northeast this November. The tour opens on November 5 in Rapid City, South Dakota, and wraps up on November 21 in Lawrence, Kansas. Tickets are on sale now.
For a band that has been active for fifteen years, it's a long-overdue trip east. Guitarist and vocalist Grant Netzorg admits he's a little embarrassed it took this long: in all that time, the band has played only one show that was even in the same time zone as the Northeast. An extensive run was planned for 2020 in support of "Lux", but the pandemic scrapped it, along with everyone else's plans that year.
The shows continue the cycle for "A Crack In Everything", the band's fifth full-length, released independently in 2025. Recorded to tape at World Famous Studios in Denver with engineer Pete deBoer, the album moves away from the occult and esoteric themes of earlier records toward something far more personal. Netzorg took the title from Leonard Cohen's "Anthem" ("There is a crack in everything. That's how the light gets in") and has described the record as written during and after a hard stretch of his life, with the songs tracing both the darkness and a way out of it. The cover art is by tattoo artist Mike Lawrence.
IN THE COMPANY OF SERPENTS started in 2011 as a two-piece of Netzorg and drummer JJ Anselmi, author of the books "Doomed To Fail" and "Heavy". Anselmi soon moved to California, but the pair recorded the debut together before he left, and it came out in early 2012. Since then Netzorg has kept the project going and pushed its sound well beyond its sludge/doom starting point across five LPs. Both "Lux" (2020) and "A Crack In Everything" made Decibel Magazine's year-end album lists, and according to the band they were the only DIY releases to do so in those years.
