Haight Street Art Center in San Francisco will host "The Art Of Metallica", an exhibition tracing METALLICA's visual identity across more than four decades. It runs from November 5, 2026 to January 10, 2027 at 215 Haight Street.
The centerpiece is the original artwork for the covers of Ride The Lightning and Master Of Puppets, shown alongside concert posters and original flyers that run from the band's early club days to its recent tours. A dedicated section covers Pushead, whose artwork shaped the band's look through the '80s and '90s, and further displays chart how the METALLICA logo and other recurring imagery evolved from early sketches.
There's a strong local thread, too. The show includes the original marquee from the Old Waldorf, the San Francisco club METALLICA played in 1982, along with a retrospective of the band's tie-ins with Bay Area sports teams. Fan banners collected at shows around the world and fan art handed to the band over the years sit next to photographs, ephemera and vintage merch, and visitors can try the METALLICA remastered pinball machine.
Curatorial advisor Brian Lew, co-author of the Bay Area thrash photo book Murder In The Front Row, says the band's imagery has become a vital part of how its music is experienced. HSAC executive director Kelly Harris calls METALLICA's story San Francisco's story, and notes that the venue sits steps from the street where rock poster art was born in the 1960s.
