SATANIC PLANET's second album, Dead Deities, is out today via Relapse Records. To mark the release, the band has premiered a music video for "Satan's Spawn", the record's closing track, directed by Tzvi Peckar The Third.
The lineup is the same unlikely alliance as before: Lucien Greaves, co-founder and spokesperson of The Satanic Temple; Luke Henshaw of PLANET B and SONIDO DE LA FRONTERA; Dave Lombardo of SLAYER, MISFITS, MR. BUNGLE and DEAD CROSS; and Justin Pearson of THE LOCUST, SWING KIDS and DEAF CLUB. This time, though, the four tracked together in the same studio as a full band, and Greaves says the songs are more personal and more closely aligned with the Temple's aims than anything they have done before.
Musically, Dead Deities runs 11 tracks of tolling bells, blackened synths, noise interludes and group vocals over Lombardo's heavy drumming, opening with the ritualistic "Damnatio Memoriae" before "Antichrist" breaks things open. Lyrically, it is a protest record aimed squarely at autocracy and Christian nationalism, with "Sam Alito's Mom" taking direct aim at the Supreme Court justice who helped overturn Roe v. Wade.
"Satan's Spawn" follows earlier album previews "Sam Alito's Mom", "Church Burning" and the 15-minute cult-horror short film for "Antichrist", all of which we covered as they landed.
