Finnish modern metal band ALASE have released a new single, "Power", via Inverse Records. The track sticks with the band's current modern progressive metal sound, colored by atmospheric soundscapes, and features Ville Haavisto on vocals. He is the 18th guest singer to front ALASE.
Haavisto's clean vocals on "Power" lean toward a MUSE-like feel, while his screams and growls drive the song's heavier edge. The lyrics, written by Ninni Swan, ask how much control we really have over the direction our lives take.
Guitarist and composer Janne Lunnas says the song grew out of his love for HACKTIVIST, a long-time favorite. For the first time, he brought production elements like trap hi-hats and hand-clap samples into ALASE's music. Still, he wouldn't call "Power" a rap or nu-metal song, even with those influences in the mix, adding that constant experimenting is what keeps writing fresh for him.
Formed in 2014, ALASE have built their identity around rotating guest vocalists, with nearly 20 taking part so far. The band blends modern heavy music with atmospheric synths and electronics, and has drawn comparisons to A PERFECT CIRCLE, TESSERACT and PERIPHERY. Their second album, A Matter of Time, came out in April 2023, followed by the four-song EP Beyond Our Imagination in early 2024. Since then the band has been releasing music as standalone singles. "Power" was produced, mixed and mastered by Lunnas at Hidden River Audio.
The current lineup is Janne Lunnas (guitars), Ari Miettinen (bass), Ville Aatsinki (drums) and Ninni Swan (lyrics).
