Finnish melodic death metal band NEMECIC released "Petrol and Spark" on November 5, the third and final advance single from their upcoming EP, due out later in 2026 via Inverse Music Group. It comes with a music video directed, written and filmed by Aki Suomela.
The new track swings hard the other way from its predecessor. The band calls previous single "Mysterion" perhaps the heaviest song they have written, while "Petrol and Spark" is, by their own standards, close to a ballad. Guitarist Tuomo Salonen takes lead vocals, as he did on "The Crowing of Swans" and "The Chatter of Teeth" from the last full-length, with frontman Aki Salonen adding growls and harmonies. The lyrics, written by drummer Niko Anttila, ask whether the end of existence is necessarily a bad thing. "As you can imagine, the mood is as cheerful as ever," the band jokes.
Director Aki Suomela says the story came to him while he played the demo on repeat. The video deals with a paralyzing sense of longing and loss, and what happens when that longing makes a person willing to do anything. He describes it as a cinematic piece built on emotion, dance, flames and a touch of mythology that blurs the line between the real and the imagined.
Formed in Heinola in 2005 and now based in Jyväskylä, NEMECIC play the heavier side of melodic death metal: double-bass barrages, downtuned guitars, solos, and a mix of growls and clean singing, with nods to FEAR FACTORY, LAMB OF GOD, KATATONIA and BOLT THROWER. Their newer lyrics take a critical look at modern society, with grief, loss and the search for meaning running through them. The band have released two full-length albums so far, The Deathcantation (2017) and The Last Magic in Practice (2021).
NEMECIC are Aki Salonen (vocals), Tuomo Salonen (guitar, vocals), Pasi Rajakallio (guitar), Emil Borg (bass) and Niko Anttila (drums).
