Brazilian musician Max Cavalera was born on August 4th, 1969, in Belo Horizonte. In 1984 he co-founded SEPULTURA with his brother Igor, fronting the band through the run of albums that took Brazilian metal from a Belo Horizonte garage to the world stage: "Beneath the Remains," "Arise," the genre-redrawing "Chaos A.D." and "Roots," which fused death and groove metal with the percussion of the Xavante people. His departure in 1996, following the death of his stepson and a management dispute, split one of metal's great partnerships for over a decade. He founded SOULFLY the following year and has kept it running for twelve albums, alongside NAILBOMB, CAVALERA CONSPIRACY and KILLER BE KILLED. Few metal musicians have exported a national identity as forcefully, and his down-tuned four-string riffing remains instantly identifiable.
