BLACK SABBATH released their second album, "Paranoid," in Britain on September 18th, 1970, through Vertigo, with the American edition following on Warner Bros. in January 1971. Rodger Bain produced it at Regent Sound and Island Studios in London, and the band needed only two days in June to record it. It carries "War Pigs," "Iron Man" and "Planet Caravan" alongside the title track, written in minutes as filler and released as a single that reached number four in the UK — the band's only top twenty hit. Tony Iommi's riffs did more to define what heavy metal would sound like than any other record in the genre's history, and the album topped the British chart, a feat SABBATH would not repeat until "13" in 2013. Rolling Stone ranked it first among the hundred greatest metal albums ever made.
