The latest (as of now, not counting the live album "Live At Inferno") opus from the Norwegian epic metallers. On vocals -- the well-known Vintersorg (VINTERSORG, OTYG), on keyboards -- Lars Nedland (SOLEFALD, ASMEGIN), bass is handled by Tyr (EMPEROR, SATYRICON). Not just a lineup -- a super-lineup! That should come with certain obligations... Alas, I must regretfully report that the work of these gentlemen within their own projects is far more interesting than their participation in BORKNAGAR. The music has remained just as shamelessly pompous, though it has noticeably gained in complexity. In other words, it has become indigestible. The very first track, "The Genuine Pulse," brings to mind the old saying about a leopard and its spots: once again, straightforward black metal surges crash into bloated herds of keyboards, once again a staccato hyperblast rhythm scrapes against your eardrums, and the strained screaming so touchingly plucks at your nerve strings... Among the bright spots, one can only note the first-rate mixing and sound -- credit to Borge Finstad, a nu-black-metal producer also known for his work with MAYHEM. Many count BORKNAGAR among the metal avant-garde, but in my view, they're more like the rear guard, drowning in idleness and complacency... Quality-wise -- no argument there. But, as always, boring. Frankly "toothless" black metal...
