Before me is the disc of the rather successful in recent years lady named EMILIE AUTUMN. Characterizing the genre of "Opheliac" is very difficult. On one hand, there are many violin parts performed by Emilie herself, there's harpsichord which she also plays, frank borrowings from classical music motifs, and at the same time it's electronic music. To put it simply — well, there's no simple way to put it — there's melodic Industrial here, a bit of Darkwave, even elements of Synthtron, and the vocals are sometimes absolutely clean, sometimes intrusively shrill, and occasionally enhanced with electronic processing. Quite the mad cocktail! All of this sounds rather light and even poppy, but that arguably only benefits the music. Overall, a pleasant release — what more can one say? Sometimes in experimental electronics you encounter combinations that seem absurd at first glance but turn out to be brilliant discoveries in practice.
