Compiling my unofficial chart of the best metal albums of 2007, I naturally couldn't overlook the new release from DYING FETUS. Well of course — the band has existed since 1991, this is already their fifth full-length, and while these are indirect indicators, we understand that they add to the main thing — the love and respect from connoisseurs of real heaviness. As always before, on this record the Fetus boys are supremely technical, intricate, and non-trivial. The relentless rhythmic fills, time signature changes, and tempo shifts are so abundant that your head threatens to detach from the constant change of direction and intensity of headbanging. Never mind the head — even your auditory receptors can't always keep up with the musical metamorphoses. There's no point in discussing the instrumental content of the record — it is, as always, top-notch. Guitars — juicy heaviness, drums — frenzy and fury, vocals — the voice of the netherworld itself. "They're cutting it up, the bastards, even harder than before," said one metalhead friend of mine, and perhaps this is the only thing I'd disagree with, since the Fetus boys still haven't managed to surpass their best works, and you won't hear anything radically new on this record. Well then, at least we can be thankful that the guys haven't betrayed their ideals, and fans have nothing to complain about for now...
