Why the I SCREAM label needs GUAJIRO is an open question for that label, which generally specializes in hardcore. The disc "Material Subversivo" could just as easily have been titled "Material Derivative," "Material Already Done," or "Material Uninteresting." Indeed, before us lies fairly uncomplicated, very flat (in the negative sense), and quite poppy punk rock that expresses absolutely nothing new. The compositional side is extremely primitive, the song structures are monotonous to the extreme, and the vocals by no means save the situation — they only compound the already mounting boredom of listening to this release. On the disc's cover, the inscriptions "Republica De Cuba" and "Pasaporte" are proudly displayed. On the band's official website there is a translation of their Spanish-language lyrics, which complements the already unimpressive impression of GUAJIRO's output. The word itself denotes a Cuban peasant, and the shallow lyrics are written from the perspective of this very peasant, apparently a member of the revolutionary army; elements of oi can also be heard in the sound. In short, if everything described is someone's priority in music, then the disc can certainly be purchased. However, all else being equal, I see absolutely nothing that could interest either punk fans or aficionados of other genres in this record's material. The parts are decently recorded and mixed, the booklet is stylistically quite well executed, so the disc is perfectly fine to hold in your hands — but putting it in the player is entirely optional.
