This German collective was founded just over ten years ago, in 1994. Initially, the group tortured guitar strings extracting brutal music known as death metal. Unfortunately, I have not heard the debut or the following two albums, so I cannot paint an accurate picture of the band's musical evolution. However, having the new fourth MINDFIELD record in hand, I can tell you it has nothing in common with death metal! And pinpointing the exact style is impossible, because there is quite a mix here. The heavy end is defined by thrash and melodic death; beyond that we hear heavy/power elements, with doom/gothic thrown in for variety. You might expect the same diversity in the vocal department, but that is not the case. There is one vocalist, his voice is clean yet quite distinctive, leaving no room for easy comparisons. The choruses have a very interesting structure. With most bands, each line in the refrain is sung to virtually the same melody. But when Danny Cabus feels like singing, just when you think you have the melody figured out, you hit a wall, because the chorus construction is seriously twisted.

The album is excellent, but something is missing to make it truly perfect.
